234 Legends in Time Retirement Sale 2024 Automobilia Estimate: £80,000 - £100,000 Specialist: Nigel Gough Telephone No: 07879 637616 Lot 683 Genuine Stirling Moss Helmet - Worn for Most of His Racing Career When acquiring the helmet, our vendor, Peter Ratcliffe, asked Stirling if he could remember any races he had won wearing the helmet. Stirling confirmed ‘Well this is my helmet, my favourite helmet that I wore in the Mille Miglia and also the 1961 Monaco GP’. He also confirmed that he wore it mainly between 1953 and 1961 when he began using a Patey helmet once again. He thought that he had worn it in at least 100 races including many Grand Prix victories. Stirling had his helmets repainted at the end of every season due to stone chips, oil and general wear. The current paint was applied around 1992 and Stirling ceased to wear it after painting. The side curtains have been renewed several times because of wear and tear over the years, but the leatherwork to the rear and inside the helmet are original and have never been changed. The interior shows signs of heavy use with a wonderful patina from years of racing. There is a sticky label on which Stirling wrote his blood group. When our vendor collected it from Stirling’s Mayfair home, Stirling signed the undersigned of the peak with a white marker and a photograph of this is included. It’s accompanied by a bespoke display case and plaque and a Certificate of Authenticity from our vendor. Accompanied by a bespoke display case, plaque and a Certificate of Authenticity from our vendor and a signed copy of the book Racedrivers by Benno Muller with a personal note from Stirling, ‘You would be pushed to find a better shot of my helmet than this’ with of a photograph of him signing this iconic piece. This is a unique opportunity to own, without doubt, one of the most photographed and recognisable motor racing helmets of all time More Details Lot 683 Bid On Lot 683
