They featured a factory-installed sliding sun roof, green-tinted glass all round, matte black A-pillars, a four-light front grille with inner fog lights and 14” Pirelli alloy wheels. Mechanically, the Campaigns didn’t differ from the standard GTi, and remained powered by a naturally-aspirated 112bhp, 1.8-litre inline-four with a 5-speed manual transmission. Offered here is a rare example of these UK limited-editions and is presented in simply splendid condition following a c.£20,000 restoration in recent years. The previous private owner entrusted this example to VW specialist, JMR (John Mitchell Racing) in Littlehampton, with the brief of trying to make it one of the very best examples in the country. The work was extensive and included exterior and mechanical components being fully restored, a rebuilt replacement engine, overhauled fuel injection and a complete bare metal respray. There is simply too much to list here so we encourage all interested parties to come to the NEC, inspect the car’s history file, and see the result of all the hard work for themselves. The car is accompanied by its original Owners Manual and service book, two keys, as well as a number of receipts and invoices detailing the restoration and recent maintenance, MOT Certificates and lots of pictures. The service book is stamped up to around 90,000 miles, at which point all servicing and maintenance to the present day is supported by the aforementioned invoices. The odometer currently displays 150,618 miles which is largely academic given the amount of attention the little car has received recently. The Campaign is on offer from a significant private Collection where the emphasis is on quality and it has been surrounded by rather more exotic stablemates, however given its rarity and fabulous condition, who wouldn’t want to take it home? Introduced towards the end of the Mk1 GTi’s production, and only available with three-door ‘hatch’ bodywork, around 1,000 Campaign Edition models were produced for the UK.
