The model proved an unqualified success right from the word go, but surprisingly it took nearly six years before a genuine performance version was added to the range, in the neat and tidy form of the XR2. This sporting model may well have been inspired by the famous success of the two Ford Fiestas in the 1979 Monte-Carlo Rally; the British entry driven by Roger Clark and aided by co-driver Jim Porter, and a German entry piloted by Ari Vatanen and co-driven by David Richards. Both cars were highly modified and were powered by competition tuned versions of the 1,600cc Kent ‘crossflow’ engine - a later version of which was fitted in the Fiesta XR2, launched in 1981. Latterly the CVH engine was used. Visually, the XR2 popped into the limelight in a range of new colours, with alloy wheels, and plastic trim decorating the interior and exterior. With a quoted performance of 0-60mph in 9.3 seconds and 105mph top speed, the XR2 ‘hot hatch’ became a cult car beloved of young enthusiasts throughout the 1980s. This rare find was originally registered by Laidlaw Ford of Edinburgh on the 28th February 1986 to its one and only keeper, who used the car occasionally for a few years before being taken to his home in Sicily. Finished in a period Rosso Red with a Shadow Grey cloth interior and ‘pepperpot’ alloys, the XR2 was stored in a dry warm garage where, once again, the little Fiesta was infrequently used. It returned to the UK in early 2023 when it was duly recommissioned including a timing belt, water pump, a brake service, a full oil service and, of course, a fresh MOT. The car has had a small amount of paint rectification just to make it as close as possible to the sort of finish you might expect from a car that has covered only 13,000 miles from new. It’s still registered to its one and only keeper and showing zero previous owners. With performance Fords continuing to gain momentum, at every level, this super low-mileage XR2 is sure to generate interest and is certain to please any new keeper. A remarkable second generation XR2 with one owner and 12,999 miles from new. Virtually showroom fresh, stunning. More Details Lot 261 Bid On Lot 261
