54 The NEC Classic Motor Show Sale - Cars Registration: KZ 4607 Chassis No.: R06110746 Estimate: £30,000 - £40,000 Lot 646 1950 Land Rover Series I 80” The ‘holy grail’ for any Land Rover enthusiast is an early Series l and there are several visual clues for an early car. The lights must be behind the grille, no exterior door handles and a 1.6-litre engine. The vehicle presented here is a 1950 Land Rover Series l 80-inch, a late-production ‘lights behind the grille’ example, leaving the famous Solihull factory on 6th April 1950. It now forms part of a small private collection of special Land Rovers. Our marque-enthusiast vendor informs us that it is not perhaps a concours example but still very nice, eminently useable, and he understands it to be a (as much as an early Land Rover can be) a matching numbers example, running its original 1.6-litre petrol engine. He describes both the chassis and bulkhead as ‘very good’, the former benefitting (not unsurprisingly) from a couple of repairs over the years, but in very acceptable original form. He goes on to say that ‘the engine starts easily and ticks over like a sewing machine, but does run a little lumpy when accelerating, a minor fuel/carburettor issue perhaps. It has benefitted from a recent brake service and a complete overhaul of the gearbox, coming with a lot of receipts and history, including its old original paper logbook.’ This is where the legend started, the very basic yet ingenious go- anywhere, do-anything vehicle and this example has a patina and feel that would be impossible to fully replicate. Given the current market for early Series I Land Rovers, it represents excellent value. A very useable Lights behind the Grille example coming from an enthusiast’s collection.
