First released in March 2003, the Evo VIII was the very first Evo model to have full UK-factory approval. Prior to the VIII, Evos were imported on a bit of a nudge and a wink basis through third parties such as Ralliart and therefore weren’t covered by Mitsubishi’s normal warranty and servicing deals. Ralliart was also moved in-house, forming an integral part of the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Europe. The Evo VIII came in a few guises, the 260, FQ300, FQ320, FQ340 and FQ400 variants, the number denoting the rounded power figure the specific car produced. The FQ-400 was not only the rarest, with just 100 ever made, but also the most expensive at £47,000 new and the most powerful. It pushed out 405bhp from its 2-litre turbocharged 4G63 inline-four, making it a seriously quick motor car offering 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and tapping out at 175mph. Equally capable when the going gets twisty, it infamously humbled a 620bhp Lamborghini Murcielago around the TopGear test track without breaking a sweat. This fabulous Evo VIII (#42 of 100), first registered on 1st March 2005 and finished in Graphite Grey is very impressive and certainly one of the best we have ever seen with just two owners from new. Our marque enthusiast vendor estimates they have imported/owned/sold over 700 Evos over the years and cherry picked the very best to remain as part of their private Collection with this FQ-400 making the cut, joining the collection in 2017. With so many Evos struggling with rust due to salted UK roads, this is delightfully rust free, never having any welding or repairs underneath. The car wears its original paint, which does have stone chips at the front end, but overall presents well. The interior also presents very well with minimal wear even on the drivers side bolster. Mechanically the car is largely original, with a few upgrades such as a larger Mishimoto radiator, carbon fibre airbox/intake, aftermarket ‘catch cans’, a blow-off valve and a Sanspeed strut-brace. #42 has covered just 75,000 miles from new, and has been prepared for sale with a detail, service and fresh MOT, coming supplied with all the normal manuals and bookpacks etc. With FQ-400s so rarely seeing the open marketplace, and examples trading well in excess of £60,000, this very useable and capable example is potentially the last time one will be able to find one at such an agreeable budget. Chassis #42 of the 100 Evo VIII range-topping FQ-400s. With just two owners from new, with sympathetic upgrades, coming from a pristine private Collection of Japanese royalty.
