It had a newly rebuilt 1,600cc twin-port engine, running twin EMPI carburettors, a new wiring loom with a much more desirable modern bladed fuse box, making it both safer and easier to diagnose any electrical faults that may occur, and a good solid body that needed no welding. It also has an engine-bay fire extinguisher system for peace of mind, with a fuel pump cut-off switch. The previous owner had spent £15,000 on getting the vehicle to this stage but then decided to move on to another project. Ant and his team have totally resprayed the bodywork in this attractive tri-tone yellow below powder blue and white and fitted new seals in the doors and windows so it should be nice and snug to sleep in. They have also lowered the suspension by just over 40mm, using a drop spindle kit. This gives the vehicle an improved stance but does not unduly compromise comfort or the ride height, which still has enough clearance to enable it to be a useful vehicle in the real world. This means the suspension and steering has been entirely rebuilt with new parts and bushes. They also totally rebuilt the brakes with new discs and pads at the front as well as new drums and shoes for the rear. The interior has been retrimmed in Porsche ‘houndstooth’ fabric, imported specially for this vehicle from Germany, which has a subtle yellow fleck to tone with the cheerful exterior and is matched with a baby blue vinyl on the door cards and other surfaces. The interior was totally missing and has been designed and built from scratch; Ant’s ideas being interpreted and enacted by well-known trimmer Craig Hughes (Salvage Hunters). It now has a rock ’n’ roll bed, seats with custom-made cushions and, because it’s a full pop-top, there is space to walk around inside when needed. This camper is now ready to go and make new memories with its lucky custodian and is sure to turn heads on any campsite! Ant’s feelings on this camper: ‘As a kid I spent entire idyllic summers in a camper in Cornwall with my hippy grandparents, which was also yellow and I absolutely loved it. I still love camping and campervans so renovating this one for someone else to go off and make new memories with has been a joy. It came to me as a blank canvas as it had literally no interior at all! So, it’s been a real pleasure to create something so unique. Plus EVERYONE loves a camper, especially a yellow one!’ N.B. The image used in our catalogue is a library photo. There will be photographs of the actual car on our website shortly.
