THE ICONIC & CLASSIC SALES AT NEC 14th & 15th November 2026

40 The Iconic Sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2026 Cars The Aston Martin DBR1 remains one of the most celebrated sports racing cars ever built, its reputation cemented in 1959 when works examples finished first and second at the Le Mans 24 Hours on their way to securing that year’s World Sports Car Championship. With just five originals produced, their rarity and significance have ensured enduring legendary status. Inspired by the DBR1, AS Motorsport was established in 2007 by engineer Andrew Soar to produce highly detailed re-creations built to individual customer specification. Known as the ASM R1 Le Mans, the cars utilise a bespoke space- frame chassis with accurately dimensioned GRP bodywork, aluminium bonnet, boot and doors, rose-jointed suspension, with a de Dion rear utilising a lateral Watts linkage and trailing arm set up, adjustable coil-over suspension and disc brakes all round. 146 HLU was completed in 2017 and is powered by a 3.4-litre Jaguar XK straight- six engine, fully stripped and rebuilt by marque specialists VSE to Club Sport specification during construction. With a dyno printout record showing 207bhp, in a car that weighs just over 950kg it certainly is a seriously fun package, accompanied by a suitably evocative soundtrack. An MSA-approved electronic fire suppression system and marshals power isolation button provide additional safety measures. The car was purchased by its current owner from Aston Martin specialists McGurk in March 2026 with approximately 2,790 miles recorded. Having covered only around 300 miles between 2020 and 2025, it was subjected to a thorough recommissioning, with a comprehensive programme of upgrades, adjustments and improvements to ensure it performed as intended. Shortly after its subsequent shakedown, the R1 embarked upon a 2,000-mile road trip to Monaco and back, completing the journey without missing a beat, followed by further European touring throughout the summer. In just over six months, the current owner has added more than 6,000 trouble-free miles, an impressive demonstration of both the car’s mechanical condition and genuine usability. The interior has also been re-trimmed by Pickerings of Bradford in weatherproof period-style cloth and green hide. Prior to photography, the car returned to ASM for the fitment of its engine dressing kit, recreating the appearance of period Aston Martin competition engines. XPEL paint protection film protects the front, whilst the only noted cosmetic blemish is an approximately 1cm heat craze on the nearside wing caused by exhaust heat, with the area subsequently ceramic coated. Such has been the vendor’s enjoyment of the car that its sale is prompted not by dissatisfaction, but by his decision to commission a brand-new, all-aluminium R1 from ASM to his own specification. Presented in excellent condition with an exemplary leather-bound history file, 146 HLU has been properly enjoyed rather than simply displayed. Recently recommissioned and proven over more than 6,000 miles of enthusiastic use, it combines the visual drama and direct driving experience of the DBR1 with considerably more accessible ownership and the ability to cover serious distances. Any and all inspections are highly recommended; it certainly needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. A beautifully presented, extensively well-prepared and thoroughly enjoyed example with a 3.4-litre Jaguar heart, lightweight body and stunning aesthetics.
