THE ICONIC & CLASSIC SALE AT SUPERCAR FEST 16th May 2026
131 + buyer’s premium of 12.5% plus VAT (15% incl VAT) The RS (Rallye Sport) identity has long formed an important part of Ford’s performance heritage, with the marque achieving considerable success in international rallying throughout the 1970s. Following the success of the Mk1 Escort Twin Cam and RS1600 models, Ford established its Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) division in Aveley, Essex, dedicated to the design and production of specialist high-performance road cars sold through selected Rallye Sport dealers. Although the AVO facility closed in 1975, Ford continued to support enthusiast demand through the introduction of its ‘Series X’ upgrade programme for the Mk2 Escort RS2000. Available through approved Ford dealers, the Series X catalogue allowed customers to specify a range of factory-backed enhancements covering engine performance, suspension, braking and body styling. Most recognisable of all was the distinctive X-Pack body kit, transforming the already capable RS2000 into a more purposeful and aggressive-looking road car. Introduced in 1976, the standard Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2 utilised Ford’s 2.0-litre SOHC Pinto engine, paired with rear-wheel drive and independent front suspension, delivering strong performance and excellent handling characteristics. However, the Series X package elevated the model further, incorporating upgrades that drew heavily from Ford’s competition experience. Offered here is a 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom Series X, finished in black and understood to have been supplied new by Crystal Ford of Hull. Importantly, this is described as an original UK-supplied, right-hand drive factory-built Series X example, rather than a later conversion or recreation. First registered in the UK on 28th September 1979, the car indicates 57,979 miles at the time of cataloguing and has been in current ownership for over 10 years, with 12 former registered keepers recorded. The car is understood to retain its correct Series X specification, including the distinctive body kit, bonnet locks, uprated suspension, vented front discs and a set of five 7.5 x 13-inch alloy wheels. Power is understood to come from a Group 1 specification engine, further enhanced with period upgrades including twin 44 DFI carburettors with the correct airbox, electronic ignition and a Janspeed twin-exit stainless steel exhaust system. Tuning work is noted as having been carried out by Bog Brothers, with output understood to be in the region of 140bhp. Inside, the car benefits from a desirable period Webasto sunroof, adding further period character and usability. The vendor describes the car as presenting well throughout, including underneath. Adding further interest, this RS2000 featured in the June 1983 edition of Auto Performance magazine, appearing on the front cover and within a multi-page feature including road test coverage and photography of the actual car. An original copy of the magazine accompanies the history file. Also included is a substantial history file containing invoices and supporting documentation dating back to 1983, evidencing long-term care and maintenance. Factory-built Series X RS2000s are now widely regarded amongst the most collectible variants of the Mk2 Escort, and well-documented UK-supplied examples are seldom offered. A rare and highly desirable UK-supplied Escort RS2000 X-Pack - a factory-built X-Pack example with period magazine provenance.
