Seller Rating: «««¶¶ Score 80 / 135 Registration: GY52 FHD Chassis No.: ZAR93200000216346 Estimate: £5,000 - £7,000 Specialist: Harry Whale Telephone No: 07919 887374 Lot 722 1980 Land Rover Series III Lightweight Air Portable •The smallest Land Rover on the market at the time was a Series IIA 88” which was too heavy for most military applications. In order to deal with this, a major modification to the basic Series IIA was devised, making many body components easily detachable and removing many non-essential items. The result was the Land Rover Half-Ton, known widely as the Lightweight or Air Portable. The NATO designation was; Truck Utility FFR 1/2T 4x4 Rover Series 3 •The most significant change however was a reduction in width of 4”, by redesigning the standard Series IIA axles and fitting shorter half- shafts, which meant it would fit on a standard pallet •This example, 52-HG-27 was initially pressed into 3 Commando Brigade Signal Squadron in 1981 then later transferred to 42 Commando Royal Marines, later released from service and UK-registered in 1993 as DWR 272W •Our vendor believes that it has been subject to a £20,000 restoration, with a new chassis •Whilst there is not much in the way of invoices to confirm, it is evident that this Lightweight has been subject to extensive works and presents really well A very well presented Lightweight, previously serving in the Royal Marines and now ready for its next owner after extensive restoration.
