Produced from 1971 to 1989, it combined elegance, robustness and grand touring comfort in one package. In 1986, the model underwent a significant update, including a revised range of engines, improved suspension and crucially, the introduction of a galvanised body shell – greatly improving corrosion resistance. These later cars, often referred to as ‘facelift’ models, are among the most sought after, particularly in six-cylinder 300SL form which offered a balance of smooth power delivery and relative economy.
