22 The Dawn of Motoring Sale 2023 - Cars Registration: N/A Chassis No.: N/A Estimate: £2,000 - £3,000 Lot 251 1920 Four-Seat European Phaeton Carriage by H Gloy & Sons, Kobenhavn This carriage is a European-built example and is technically a Four-Seat European Phaeton. It was built by coachbuilders H Gloy & Sons, Kobenhavn (Copenhagen) around the turn of the century and they continued to make them until the 1930s. This example dates from 1920 and was purchased by David Biggins for his late wife to compete with her ponies and has been much used and enjoyed. The wooden wheels have been replaced at some time, running on solid rubber and the leather wings are stitched over metal frames. The foot brake operates two shoes on the leading edge of the rear wheels, the steering plate is in good order and the carriage rolls freely. It has been retrimmed in green velour at some time, now rather faded, and features deep buttoning to the base. Finished in green and black and sporting two period carriage lamps in black and brass, this is a good-looking vehicle that would benefit from a light restoration. On offer from the David Biggins Collection, this four-seat Carriage was used for many competitions over the years and remains in delightful older restored condition.
